Kirinyaga University successfully held it's 5th Science, Technology and Innovation Day at the Kilele Tuition Block on March 18-19, 2026 bringing together staff and students in a vibrant showcase of creativity, research and innovation. The event provided a dynamic platform for participants to present bold ideas, practical solutions and cutting-edge concepts aimed at addressing real-world challenges.

The program began with welcoming remarks from the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Charles O. A. Omwandho, Ph.D., who underscored the importance of nurturing a culture of innovation and collaboration within the University. This was followed by opening remarks from the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mary Ndung’u, Ph.D., who emphasized the institution’s commitment to advancing research and empowering students to become problem-solvers in a rapidly evolving world. The event was  further enriched by insightful keynote addresses from distinguished speakers. Dr. Kamau Gachigi, Executive Director of Gearbox and a faculty member in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi, shared perspectives on innovation and technology development, while Mr. John Matogo, Middle East & Africa Leader for IBM Corporate Social Responsibility, highlighted the importance of partnerships in driving impactful and sustainable solutions. Ms. Lorna Juma, Oracle Academy Program Manager for Africa, was the Chief Guest on the second day of the Innovation Day held on March 19, 2026. In her address, she underscored the importance of institutionalizing digital transformation to enhance teaching and learning, and encouraged the university community to leverage Oracle Academy resources to strengthen skills and remain competitive in the digital era.

Throughout the exhibition, participants showcased research-driven projects and creative prototypes that reflected the University’s growing strength in Science, Technology, and Innovation. The presentations demonstrated not only Technical expertise but also a strong focus on solving pressing societal challenges. Students greatly benefited from the event, gaining valuable exposure to practical problem-solving, innovative thinking, and emerging technologies. They engaged directly with experts, exchanged ideas, and showcased their work, fostering both creativity and professional growth. The successful culmination of the event reaffirmed the University’s role as a hub of innovation and a center for nurturing talent, collaboration, and transformative ideas. The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing top winners across five categories, with prizes awarded and certificates presented to all participants behind the 54 showcased projects.
