AUSTRALIAN PROFESSORS AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS VISIT KIRINYAGA UNIVERSITY

Emeritus Professor Timothy Roberts, Dr. Patrice Newell and ten environmental science students from the University of Newcastle, Australia have had a week long visit at Kirinyaga University.  The visit that targeted exchange of ideas on environmental cleaning and rehabilitation has seen the visitors engage in tree planting activities at Kirinyaga University (January 13, 2020), cleaning exercise at Kutus town (January 14, 2020), tree planting at Mount Kenya Forest – Kimunye (January 16, 2020).

The visitors also participated in Somesha comrade walk aimed at raising funds to assist the needy students of Kirinyaga University pay tuition fees (January 17, 2020).

The parties made presentations and exchanged ideas on environmental conservation and protection as well as awareness on new approaches to generation of clean energy.

 

Through a memorandum of understanding between University of Newcastle and Kirinyaga University signed on November 1, 2018, the two universities are bound to participate in joint research, development and implementation of academic programs, workshops and conferences as well as cultural exchange programs for students and faculty.

Besides academics and environmental interests, Professors Tim Roberts (University of Newcastle) and Charles Omwandho (DVC-ASA, KyU) working together with Prof. Madara Ogot (DVC-RPE, University of Nairobi) are also intent on mobilizing funds to support interest in STEM subjects through electric and solar car competitions to be organized at a later date for primary and secondary school children in Kenya.
It is also worth noting that Kirinyaga University and University of Newcastle in 2019 invited the University of Nairobi to join a partnership that saw the three universities join Association of Australian-African Universities Network.
