From Classroom to Code: Josphat Kiptanui Builds program to Power Kenya's CBC

One of our outstanding graduates, Josphat Kiptanui, who recently completed his Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering, has already begun making a meaningful impact in the education sector. His groundbreaking platform, Edupoa, is designed to support the effective implementation of Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Edupoa is more than just a digital tool — it is a bold response to the challenges faced by educators and learners navigating the CBC framework. With an intuitive interface and curriculum-aligned features, Edupoa empowers teachers to plan more efficiently and enables students to learn at their own pace, based on individual competencies. Born out of both vision and necessity, Edupoa bridges the gap between traditional learning and modern, tech-driven education.

“CBC has great potential, but it needs the right tools and support systems. Edupoa was built to make CBC accessible and effective for everyone,” Josphat shares. “Edupoa is that tool — offering a user-friendly interface, curriculum-aligned content, and innovative features that adapt to learners' needs across different skill levels”

Introduced in 2017 to replace the long-standing 8-4-4 system, Kenya’s CBC was envisioned as a more learner-centered, skills-based model aimed at equipping students with 21st-century competencies such as creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.

However, the transition has not been without its hurdles. Many schools continue to face Monitoring difficulties, Implementation gaps and Limited infrastructure.

This is where Edupoa steps in, a solution crafted not just with technical skill, but with deep understanding of Kenya’s educational landscape. Edupoa offers a platform for continuous assessment, scalability and inclusivity, and a platform for educators to manage classes and focus on what matters the most: teaching.

Josphat Kiptanui holds a bachelor’s degree in software engineering where he studied from August 2019 to October 2023.During his time at the university, he gained solid skills in software development, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, deep learning, and convolutional neural networks.

This innovation is not only a technological breakthrough, it’s a timely response to one of Kenya’s most ambitious educational reforms.

His journey is a proud testament to the impact of quality education and innovation nurtured at Kirinyaga University where creativity, critical thinking, and community go hand in hand.

Josphat’s story is not just one of personal success — it’s a glimpse into the future of Kenyan education, where young minds are building the solutions our country needs. When education meets innovation, the results are transformative.
