KIRINYAGA UNIVERSITY PARTICIPATES IN ORIGIN FEST 2025 HACKATHON AND SCHOOL FAIR ON VIRTUAL REALITY(VR)/ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) FOR STEM EDUCATION

Dr. Josphat Karani and Dr. Zachary Kayiita led a team of 8 students from the department of Pure and Applied Sciences who participated in the Origin Fest 2025 Hackathon held on May 10-12, 2025 at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), Nyeri. The event brought together students, innovators, and researchers to explore emerging technologies in STEM education, with a focus on Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The KyU team actively engaged in all scheduled hackathon activities, including ideation, prototyping, and pitching. Participants collaborated across disciplines to develop innovative solutions applying VR/AI to enhance STEM learning experiences.

The Space Team comprising Rehyan Lyai, Ian Abungana, and Brian Karanja from Kirinyaga University were awarded Best Innovation in the Training Category for their project “The Classroom”, which applied VR/AI technologies to transform STEM education delivery. The final Exhibition and Awards Showcase was held on Wednesday, June 24, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Origin Lab, DeKUT and KyU was among the top four of 10 Universities recognized as winners emerging as the best in the training category.
