Engineering is about changing the world by creating new solutions to society’s problems.
Technological advances and global compensation have forced mechanical engineers to evolve so that they can meet or even exceed the expectations of the world.  Therefore, a mechanical engineer of the 21st century must be equipped with extra knowledge on aspects of electrical engineering, civil engineering and even programming. The proposed programmes have taken these aspects into consideration so as to meet the ever changing demands from an engineer.  The proposed courses dissect the traditional mechanical engineering programme and integrate several aspects of technological advancements in the program.  Some of the proposed courses include Mechanical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering & Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering.

Introduction of Bachelor of Technology in Electronic and Computer Engineering (BTec .ECE) program

Btec. ECE is a four year academic program (8 semesters), designed to develop practical oriented skills, understanding of concepts, analysis and problem solving skills, to promote innovative solutions to problems informed by applied research in Electronics and Computer Engineering. Technology advancement in electronics led to the development of computers , computer systems and communication systems which find a wide range of applications in house hold equipment ,institutions and industries ,and so the combined fields of Electronic and computer Engineering work hand in hand.
Through this program ,the students will gain insights in to fundamental theories, methods and practical subjects in the combined fields which  will help them be able to utilize up to date scientific methods ,tools and techniques to analyze and solve complex real life problems.
Upon graduating, students will be able to handle complex situations that arise in research or developments related environments, can work independently or in collaboration with other technical fields.

Admissions requirements

To be admitted to the BTech.ECE program, a candidate must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements:
Either

  • Have an overall KCSE mean grade C+ (plus) in the following individual cluster subjects:
    Alternative A -Mathematics  C+, Physics  C+, Chemistry C+, Geography or Biology C+    
    Alternative B- Mathematics C+ , Physical Sciences C+, Biological sciences C+, Geography  C+
  • Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) or the A-level equivalent to the requirements below:
    i)    At least two principal passes in Mathematics and Physics; and
    ii)    At least a total score of nine (9) points at the KACE or equivalent; and
    iii)    At least a principal pass in physics and chemistry at the KACE or its equivalent.
  • Be a holder of a diploma certificate in a relevant electrical engineering discipline. Diploma holders with distinction or credit pass will normally be admitted into the second year of study while those with pass will be admitted into the first year of study.
        Or
  • Be a holder of other qualifications recognized by the Senate as equivalent to a, b or c above.

What is common to the branches of Engineering is their use of fundamental ideas involving variables, numbers and units, and the creative use of energy, materials, motion and information.  Engineering is hands-on and minds-on.

Progression

Learners can progress from certificate programmes, Diploma, Degree, Master’s degree and PhD level.
Finally you will learn the needs for professional ethics in your career.  This is an on-going activity you will need regardless of your specialization or job level in whatever direction your career takes you.

In the Department of Architecture and Building Science, two key values applied in equal measures are ergonomics and aesthetics. As we transfer these skills, we pay greater attention to the trainees’ artistic skills as well as their imaginative capabilities to ensure functionality and success.

Department of Architecture and Building Science was established to offer cutting edge professional and academic training in line with the University’s mission of “To train and develop world class human resource equipped with innovative technology and skills to meet the demands of a dynamic world”

The departments’ mission is to “Train innovative and creative world class Architects and Builders”

Architecture and Building Science department is the place where imagination of future urban and rural places is being conceptualized and implemented. It is also where the future professionals working on infrastructure development and the environment are being prepared.

The department is home to 240 students enrolled in professional construction related diplomas and certificates.
Led by top intellectuals and professionals, the department runs “Professional plus programmes” that focus on building individuals with intellectual (knowledge), professional (discretionary) and technical (application) competencies.

Upon completion of course work, students go through industrial based internships for a period not less than 16 weeks consequently making hands-on the job professionals.

ABOUT US

Introduction

The Department of Architecture and Building sciences was re-structured from the then Building Department in former Kirinyaga Technical Institute, in the year 2012 with the establishment of Kirinyaga University. The department had 13 faculties and over 100 students then, but has grown to current student population of 240, enrolled in Diploma and Certificate programs in Architecture and Building Construction.

Our graduates are equipped with knowledge and skills relevant to the diverse range of professions including planning, design, construction, development, costing, valuation and management of our environment and infrastructure. Our philosophy is to promote effective training, education, research and academic excellence in the built environment and other related fields.

The Department by providing training in Architecture, Building Construction, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying and Construction Project Management, facilitates growth in professional practice and industrial growth locally and internationally thereby supporting realization of vision 2030.

In delivering our curriculum we ensure that student are also engaged in industrial attachments, fieldtrips, and practical work, which supplement the usual mix of lectures, assignments and group work.

Previous chairman of the Department

Mr. Joel Kinyua who retired honorably in June 2015, was the first chairman, who steered the department from 2012 to June 2015.

Introduction

This course equips the learners with knowledge, skills and attitude in building construction.

Employment Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the course, the graduates will easily secure employments in construction firms, government institutions or practice as sole proprietors (contractors).

Entry requirement

KCSE mean grade C (plain) , OR KCE Division III , OR KCSE means grade C- (minus) with a certificate in building related courses(plumbing, masonry, carpentry) , OR an equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the University Academic Board.
Duration: 6 (six) Semesters

Vertical Mobility

After completion of this course, graduates can advance in the following degree courses:

Diploma in Architecture

This course equips the learners with knowledge, skills and attitude in building construction drawings in order to correctly prepare drawings and construct a building from inception to completion.

KCSE mean grade C- (minus), OR KCE Division IV, OR KCSE means grade D+ (plus) with a KNEC Artisan certificate in building related course.
Duration: 3 (Three) Semesters

Certificate in Architectural Studies

Introduction

This course equips the learners with knowledge of building drawings in order to correctly interpret drawings and construct a building from inception to completion.

The two new programmes are proposed to be mounted as from May 2016:

Diploma in Civil Engineering

Entry Requirement

(i)    KCSE with minimum aggregate of C (plain) with C-(minus) in mathematics/physics, Chemistry or Physical Science
      OR
(ii)    KCE division III with at least a pass in Physics/Mathematics, Chemistry
      OR
(iii)    KCSE C-(Minus) with Credit pass in relevant Certificate from an institution recognized by the University Senate.

Mode of Study: Full Time

Course duration: 7 semesters

Fees: Semester I-25,660/=
Semester II-25,660/=

Diploma in Quantity Survey

Entry Requirement

(i)    KCSE with minimum aggregate of C (plain)
      OR
(ii)    KCE division III with at least a pass in Physics/Mathematics, Chemistry

Electrical, Electronic Engineering & Technology

CHAIRMAN MESSAGE

Welcome to the department of Electrical, Electronic Engineering and Technology. The department offers high quality, hands on knowledge and skills training in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Technology to produce competent human resource. Our programmes meet skills required in the job market. In addition to the technical exposure in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Technology, our programmes are also enriched with management and entrepreneurial skills to prepare our graduates for self-employment.

The department through the support of the KyUC Management is in the process of mounting two renewable energy short courses namely:-

1.    Ultra Low Head Micro Hydro Power (ULH-HMP) technology.

Two ULH-HMP systems will soon be installed in Mwea through the Collaboration of Kenyan government and Japanese government and this will form a very important demonstration site for the students who will be soon undertaking the training.

2.    Solar Photo Voltaic and thermal Systems

Designed to provide practical skills, knowledge and attitudes to the trainees. This will enable our graduates to carry out solar installation and servicing. The course emphasises on practical work (80%) and only 20 % theory.
The department also offers mentorship to our students to inculcate in them, positive values and integrity in addition to knowledge, skills and competence in the electrical, electronic areas of specialization .The department has also embraced an effective provision of training through digital platform where students are able to get lecture notes on e-learning portal two days before a scheduled lecture.  

Our students through industrial attachments, enriche their exposure to real industrial environment.

Entry requirement

Minimum university admission requirements:

i. KCSE mean grade C (plain) or
ii. KCE division III or
iii. A pass in Electrical Engineering certificate (KNEC) or
iv.    Any other relevant electrical engineering certificate from a recognized institution equivalent to i, ii and iii above.

2.    Certificate in Electrical, Electronic Engineering and Technology.

An applicant must satisfy any of the following minimum university admission requirements:

i. KCSE mean grade C- (minus) or
ii. KCE division IV or
iii. Artisan qualification in electrical installation or
iv. Any other relevant electrical engineering certificate from a recognized institution equivalent to i, ii and iii above.
