School of Pure and Applied Sciences

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The school of Pure and Applied Sciences was started in November 2013 with a population of about 100 students. The School has since grown to have two departments (Department of Pure and Applied Sciences and Department of Computing and Information Technology) and so many students. The school has four fields namely:

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Information Technology

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome to the school of Pure and Applied Sciences, Kirinyaga University. Science being the force behind industrial development, the school aims at training best scientist worldwide to drive the industries. With strong mathematical and statistics skills, the school can offer Mathematical modeling and statistical modeling to different problems e.g. in engineering, disease and population growth hence the solution.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

Mathematics and Computer Science course aims at integrating the Mathematics skills and Computer skills to solve real life problems. They develop computer programs and software for the industries. Apart from self employment, the graduates will find employments in commercial banks, brokerage houses, investment banks and software development companies.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN STATISTICS

Statistics course is majorly concerned with data collection, analysis and statistical modeling. The graduates will work as statistician or a statistical consultant in research companies, insurance companies, banks, brokerage houses, investment banks, Government institutions and NGOs.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Introduction:

The need for Information Communication Technology knowledge and skills has become a key ingredient in all sectors of the economy. Bachelor of Science in information technology  is structured to instill appropriate knowledge of better understanding of computer hardware, software and the emerging trends in the ICT sector.

Entry Requirements:

Stage 1: Must have an aggregate grade of C+(plus) in KCSE (or equivalent examination) and a minimum grade of C in Mathematics and English.

Stage II: Diploma in Management and Information Technology or Diploma in Information Technology with credit or any other qualification recognized by the University senate.

Duration:

3 Years full time or part time (evening & weekends)

An aggregate grade of C (plain) in KCSE
A grade of C (plain) in Mathematics and English and credit pass in IT certificate or an equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the University Board.

Duration:

1 ½ year full time or part time (evening & weekends)

The courses in the program have been selected to give broad coverage of the functional areas of information technology. The program has also been designed to meet the needs of organizations in terms of technological advancements.

Introduction:

Proficiency in Computer Applications is a short course which aim is to equip the trainee with knowledge and practical skills to perform practical tasks using relevant computer applications. Each package is complete in itself and a trainee has the option to register one or more computer packages as per needs.

Entry Requirements:

A minimum of KCSE certificate or its equivalent as may be approved by the School of Computing and Information Technology

Duration:

4 weeks full time or part time (evening & weekends)

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Introduction:

Professional certificate in information systems is a short course whose aim is to equip the trainee with knowledge and skills to perform various tasks using relevant computer technologies. The course is designed to provide the trainee with skills that are relevant to the dynamic job market in both public and private sector.

Entry Requirements:

Be a holder of KCSE/KACE/KCE certificate

Duration:

72 hours on full time or part time (evening & weekends)

CISCO SHORT COURSES

1. IT Essentials covers fundamental computer and career skills for entry-level IT jobs. The IT Essentials curriculum includes hands-on labs that provide practical experience. Virtual tools help you hone your troubleshooting skills and practice what you learn.

Career opportunities:

IT/technical support, field service technician, help desk technician, network support technician. 2. Introduction to the Internet of Everything (IoE) provides an overview of the concepts and challenges of the IoE economy. The course discusses the Internet and its evolution to the interconnection of people, processes, data, and things that forms the Internet of Everything.

Collaboration engineer, data center technician, network engineer, software engineer. 3. Introduction to Cyber security course covers the importance of cybersecurity, the most common risks, and how to mitigate them.

Applicable to any professionals responsible for security and privacy of company or customer systems. 4. The Entrepreneurship course uses interactive, online case studies to help you develop business and financial skills and to start a business using your networking technology skills.

PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE IN DATA ANALYSIS USING

This course provides introduction to applied statistics and SPSS for analysing quantitative data. The training course will present modern statistical methods needed for data analysis and statistical reasoning, and will equip leaners with knowledge of how to use SPSS for data analysis, interpretation and data presentation. Participants interested in learning and picking up quantitative data analysis methods and concepts will find this course useful and applicable.  Practical data analysis sessions will be based on publicly available data from academic research, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), and participants own data.

 

PROPOSED PROGRAMMES

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ACTUARIAL SCIENCE

Actuarial Science is concerned with the construction of models and solutions for financial, business, and societal problems involving uncertain future events.  Actuarial practitioners, also known as Actuaries, have been described as financial architects and social mathematicians.  Broadly speaking, actuaries forecast the cost of future risks and improve financial decision making by developing models to evaluate the current financial implications of uncertain future events. The graduates will mostly find employment in the insurance, employee benefits, and pension and management consulting industry.  Actuaries will also be employed in commercial banks, brokerage houses, investment banks and software development companies.  However, the elaborate statistical base build in this course can also see a graduate work as a statistician or a statistical consultant.
